WHAT CAUSES ALLERGIES?2

An allergy is your body’s reaction to a foreign substance, like pollen or pet dander (these substances are called allergens). When you come into contact with an allergen, your immune system sees it as harmful, and starts producing antibodies to fight it. The antibodies help to remove the allergens from your body by binding to the allergy cells (mast cells), and this causes the allergy cells to release a substance called histamine. Histamine is what causes your allergy symptoms.

Common allergy symptoms include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes
  • Itching
  • Headache
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hives or a rash
