Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that’s related to seasonal changes at certain times of the year, with symptoms starting and ending around the same time every year.1 It’s more common in the northern hemisphere, but it affects people all around the globe, including South Africans.2

Most often, SAD occurs during autumn and winter.1 This is due to a few key causes that can trigger depression symptoms:1

  • Low vitamin D levels, caused by less exposure to sunlight.
  • Lower levels of serotonin (a neurotransmitter that affect your mood), also due to less sunlight and low vitamin D.
  • Changes to your levels of melatonin, a hormone that helps to regulate sleep and mood. Disrupted melatonin levels can cause disrupted or irregular sleep patterns and depressed moods.
  • Changes to your circadian rhythm. Shorter daylight hours can disrupt your body’s “internal clock” and make you feel depressed or lethargic.

Part 1: Use the following universal treatments every day until you notice an improvement.
