Low level Laser expert, Dr Bernard Brom, the father of low-level laser therapy in South Africa, shares about his life and experiences. Here are some highlights from the interview
Dr Bernard Brom is known as the father of low-level laser therapy in South Africa. He was recently a guest on the Healing with Coherence podcast, discussing his journey to holistic healing and his use of lasers in his practice.
Let’s look at the key points from Dr Brom’s interview:
PIONEERING LASER THERAPY IN SOUTH AFRICA
About Dr Brom
Dr Brom is an integrative doctor, a functional medicine doctor, artist, alchemist of medicine, and healthy medicine doctor. He has more than 40 years’ experience as a laser practitioner. He is the Founding Chairman of the SA Society of Integrative Medicine.
Dr Brom has found low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to be a highly effective and versatile tool for holistic healing. He describes it as a “doctor in a box”, thanks to its ability to treat so many acute and chronic conditions in patients of all ages.
The journey to laser
In the 1980s, Dr Brom was searching for a modality he could use in his drug-free practice. While attending an acupuncture workshop, a naturopath told him that this therapy could be done using a laser instead of needles. This piqued his curiosity and he decided to explore further.
Dr Brom was introduced to the use of helium-neon laser as a healing modality, and began to pioneer its use in his practice. For the first 2 years of his acupuncture practice, he didn’t touch a needle, but only used laser. He found it to be a transformative tool, gradually starting to use it on areas that weren’t acupuncture points and eventually on a range of medical conditions. He realised that it had both an acupuncture effect and a therapeutic laser effect, and noticed remarkable results in patients from as early as the first treatment.
“I was seeing two or three miracles a week!” he says.
For example: A patient came to see Dr Brom with adhesions in her abdomen, caused by a caesarean section. She had undergone four surgeries and the adhesions kept coming back. She came to Dr Brom unable to stand up straight. By her fifth weekly laser treatment, she was able to stand up normally again.
CAN CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE BE UNHEALTHY?
Iatrogenic disease is an illness caused to a patient by medical treatments. This may include an adverse reaction to medication or surgery. Iatrogenic disease is a common cause of ill health and death. Dr Brom describes it as “doctor-induced disease”. This shows how conventional medicine can be harmful rather than healthy.
“There are no effects, only side-effects,” says Dr Brom, discussing the use of conventional drug therapy.
Conventional medicine focuses only on “fixing what’s broken”. Holistic or functional medicine recognises that to heal a person rather than simply treat them, function must be improved. This means incorporating healthy changes into every part of a patient’s lifestyle, such as diet, exercise and stress management. Laser therapy is also a powerful modality used to improve cellular function and boost wellness, rather than simply treating an illness.
For example: Conventional anti-inflammatory drugs work by blocking the processes that cause inflammation. A natural anti-inflammatory treatment (like coMra laser therapy) helps the natural healing processes of the body to complete themselves more effectively. The natural treatment supports function, rather than interfering with it.

Dr Brom’s final message to those looking for alternatives to conventional medicine:
