FIRST AID FOR FURRY FRIENDS

coMra is a safe, non-invasive treatment for pain and inflammation that can be used on dogs, cats, horses and even birds. It’s also easy to use when your animal is distressed and giving them medication could be difficult. CLIENT TESTIMONIAL: DULLSTROOM BIRD OF PREY AND REHABILITATION CENTRE

The Dullstroom Bird of Prey and Rehabilitation Centre cares for injured and orphaned birds of prey in South Africa, and hosts educational events to raise awareness about endangered birds of prey.

Frith Douglas, Manager at the centre, reports on how coMra helped a falcon in their care:³

“Gemma is a Lanner falcon that came into the Centre on 10 July 2020. We took her through to our vets in White River and x-rays revealed a midshaft fracture of the radius and ulna of the right wing. Our vets operated and pinned the radius and did an external fixator of the ulna. Her wing then had to remain strapped for six weeks for the fracture to heal.

Once the vets were happy the fracture was sufficiently healed, we needed to start the long road of rehabilitation which meant fitting her with equipment and starting fitness training. She showed very slow progress and the wing was definitely very sore. Lanner falcons need to be very fit and need to hunt their prey at high speeds.

We decided to try coMra therapy to see if we could aid with the recovery process. We did a three-week programme every second day. The results have been very pleasing.

From July, before treatment was started, she only was able to reach a maximum altitude of 20m and maximum speed of 55km/h with a total flying distance of 3.6km. She has improved with treatments and is now attaining heights of over 1060m with speeds up to 155km/h and distances of over 7km.”

Georg Beining has worked extensively with horses in Chile and had the opportunity to experience the benefits of coMra therapy for multiple conditions and injuries. He recalls treating a horse named Mara, who wounded her head when she bumped into a nail:⁴

“We went through and treated Mara, and this was one of my first exposures to working with open wounds with animals, and treating them with coMra. Within the first few days, there was a lot of liquid coming out of the wound, after treating with coMra. And in the first few days, when there was a lot of dead tissue being replaced, we saw a lot of pus and necrotic or dead tissue being expressed. But the moment all that tissue had been cleaned out from inside… then things would change quite a lot within the wound. When the immune system is in a heightened repair state, the body then focuses on eliminating any toxins or dead tissue before the repair process can begin. Once the first phase is done, then from inside, the wound starts filling up. Once the wound is filled out, the borders start closing.

I went back to the stables a month and a half later, or two months, to see if there was any scarring. And I couldn’t find where the wound was. So I was very impressed.”
