The Phases of Sleep

During the time you spend asleep, your brain will cycle repeatedly through two different types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep.1,2

  1. The first part of the cycle is NREM sleep, which includes 4 stages.
    • Stage 1: The transition between being awake and falling asleep.
    • Stage 2: Light sleep – your heart rate and breathing regulate and body temperature drops.
    • Stages 3 and 4: Deep sleep – restful and restorative, important for learning and memory.
  2. The second part of the cycle is REM sleep. During this time, your brain is active and you will be more likely to dream. Your breathing rate increases and your muscles become limp. Your brain processes emotional experiences, consolidates memories and repairs itself.

This cycle then repeats itself four or five times during a typical night of sleep. With each cycle, you spend less time in the deeper stages of non-REM sleep, and more time in REM sleep.3

The Benefits of Getting Enough Sleep

Good sleep is essential for physical and mental health.4 Sleep affects multiple systems in your body to give you a variety of important health benefits:2,5,6

  • Immune system: Getting enough sleep strengthens your immunity, so you get sick less often.
  • Heart and circulatory system: Good sleep regulates your heart rate and blood pressure, lowering your risk of stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure and heart attacks.
  • Endocrine system: Sleep drives the release of hormones (such as melatonin, growth hormone and cortisol) that control metabolism, growth and stress levels. Good sleep improves your mood and can help you maintain a healthy weight.

The Consequences of Sleep Loss

Without enough good-quality sleep (i.e., less than 7–8 hours a night), your physical and psychological health can start to suffer.7 This can lead to your attention and memory becoming fuzzy, and can also affect your mood and your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to common infections.2 Studies also report that you can become more vulnerable to injuries caused by accidents like car crashes.7

“After decades of research, the case can be confidently made that sleep loss and sleep disorders have profound and widespread effects on human health.” – Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation: An Unmet Public Health Problem, 20067

How coMra Supports Healthy Sleep

Low-level laser therapy has been shown to improve sleep. One study from 2025 concluded that LLLT helped to improve sleep in shift workers, while also alleviating stress, depression and anxiety.8

coMra’s UNIVERSAL 5 protocol is designed to treat insomnia and other conditions that can disrupt sleep, including stress, depression, adrenal fatigue and emotional exhaustion.9

This 23-minute protocol targets key points on the chest and head, as well as the adrenal glands.

  • Follow the course 2x daily until you notice improvement.
  • Continue for 7 days further.
  • Allow 2 weeks’ rest and repeat as needed.

Restoring Harmony with the coMra Palm 520 Green

The coMra Palm 520 Green device is designed to support mental health aspects of healing and their impact on physical health. It’s ideal for supporting your recovery from day-to-day stress, which can cause disturbed sleep patterns.10

SYSTEMIC 2 is a 27-minute protocol designed to treat:

  • Low sleep quality
  • Long-term emotional stress
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings

Use 2x daily until you notice improvement, then continue for 7 days further.

Note: The green Palm can help your whole family enjoy better sleep. SYSTEMIC 4 improves sleep quality in infants under a year old, while SYSTEMIC 5 improves sleep quality for children aged 1–10 years.10

The coMra Palm 520 Green’s HEAD 1 protocol also treats low sleep quality, as well as headaches caused by pain or pressure.10

Use 1–3x daily as needed for 14 days.

More About Green Laser Therapy

Green light has therapeutic properties that make it especially good for modulating nervous system activity. Unlike blue and red lights, which have a more stimulating effect, green light promotes a state of balanced activation which is not too energising but not too sedating.11

The 520nm green wavelength can be used to balance the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation and rest.11

Combined with the coloured LED light and magnetic field therapies provided by the coMra device, the green laser provides a gentle but powerful modality that helps shift the body from a stress response to a healing state.11

NOTE: coMra is a powerful modality. The uses described above are those recommended by the coMra User Guide. Experience over 10 years has shown that in the case of most chronic conditions, treatments can also be spread out to once or twice per week, without taking the breaks outlined in the guide.
